Biography

Mary Klayder, PhD, brings over 33 years of KU teaching and mentoring experience to the University Honors Program, where she serves as a Faculty Fellow and a member of the Honors Advisory Board. A life-long Jayhawk, Klayder earned a BA in Art History, a BS in Language Arts, an MA in Educational Curriculum and Instruction, and her PhD in English all at KU. She currently co-chairs undergraduate studies in the KU English department. For the past 28 years Klayder has led three annual study abroad Honors courses, taking over 1,000 students on life-changing trips that fuse coursework with experiential learning in the United Kingdom and Costa Rica. Not only is she a member of the KU Women's Hall of Fame, Klayder has also received numerous accolades from KU students, including the Honor an Outstanding Progressive Educator (HOPE) Award, the Outstanding Woman Educator Award, the J. Michael Young Advising Award, and six Mortar Board Outstanding Educator Awards. She published Painted Ponies: Essays on Memory and Loss in 2008.
