Biography

Darren Canady is a playwright. Winner of the 2012 M. Elizabeth Osborn New Play Award for Brothers of the Dust, Canady has earned numerous awards for his work including the Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award, the Theodore Ward Prize for African American Playwrights, and the Julliard School’s Lecomte du Nouy Prize. His plays have been performed in Chicago, London, and New York. In addition, Canady has held residencies at America-in-Play, the Dorothy Strelsin New American Writers Group, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and his work has been recognized with the Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Award in Atlanta. A Kansas native, Canady credits his dramatic writing to a family history of storytelling, and the unique culture of African-American life in the Midwest.
