Study Abroad Programs
The University Honors Program coordinates several short-term study abroad programs during academic breaks that give students the chance to find knowledge and make self discoveries in new global and cultural contexts.
A trio of programs have strong affiliations with the honors program, including on-campus curricular components that offer honors credit and program leadership from honors staff members and instructors:
- Race, History & Health in Brazil: Students spend winter break in the coastal Brazilian city of Salvador during this program, which takes a look at the "the interconnections between race and racism, history and politics, and health and inequality in Brazil's Afro-diasporic communities." For 2027, the application deadline is Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026.
- Travel Writing in Costa Rica: Participants in this winter-break program co-led by honors associate director Harry Swartz explore Costa Rica's political, ecological, and tourist-related concerns in various locations on the island, including national parks and cultural centers. For 2027, the application deadline is Sunday, Sept. 13, 2026.
- London Review: Co-led by program director Sarah Crawford-Parker, this spring-break experience takes students to London, one of the world's cultural, historical, and economic hubs. Students document their experiences for inclusion in a literary journal-style publication they create as part of a spring-semester course, HNRS 496 London Review. For 2027, the application deadline is Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026.
Honors students can apply for Honors Opportunity Awards (HOAs) to help partially cover the costs of theses or other study abroad experiences. Periods I and II are the ideal HOA application windows for students seeking funds for the above experiences.
