Support

Students define the honors community, but a well-connected and compassionate “Success Team” surrounds those students, ensuring their progress and supporting their success.

Mentoring

Students look to our invested and energetic honors community — its faculty and staff, as well as past and present students — when seeking mentors to inspire and motivate them.

  • Seminar instructors and assistants: The honors first-year seminar instructor serves as their students’ honors mentor, providing guidance and assistance when needed for every year or an honors program career. The seminar’s assistant, too, provides help and encouragement as students transition to university life.
  • Honors Faculty Fellows: This corps of committed faculty pledge extended time and increased involvement to the program and its students. Representing many of KU’s schools, our Honors Faculty Fellows are available to share their expertise, advice, and networks.
  • Program alumni: Past participants of the University Honors Program bring expertise and enthusiasm back to our students in a variety of ways. KU Mentoring+ offers current honors students a LinkedIn-style digital experience to network with alumni from the program and in their field.
  • Program staff: Every staff member of the University Honors Program has an office in the Nunemaker Center. Students can always seek the perspective of a graduate assistant, student experience or communications team member, or the director if a question, possibility, or need presents itself.

Advising

An honors advisor is a vital resource and sounding board for students throughout their academic careers. From choosing a major to finding research opportunities to preparing for life after college, advisors look forward to working with each student individually.

When do students work with their honors advisor?

  • At Orientation: Students admitted to the honors program begin a relationship with their honors advisor, who is a member of Jayhawk Academic Advising, before their first semester begins.
  • Every semester: To prepare for enrollment, understand holds, and hear of incoming opportunities that fit their plans, students meet with their honors advisor in the fall and spring. Meetings are scheduled through Jayhawk GPS.
  • When needed: Drop-in, virtual advising is available to students needing a little assistance or a quick perspective. JAA offers drop-in advising Mondays and Thursdays from 12:30 to 4:3o p.m.
