Del Shankel received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Walla Walla University. In 1952 he was drafted into the Army, and participated in the Lab Technology Training program. This experience led him to pursue a doctorate in bacteriology at the University of Texas. Dr. Shankel came to KU in 1959 as an Assistant Professor in the bacteriology department. Dr. Shankel is the 15th Chancellor of the University of Kansas.
